It felt like my heart stopped when Merrick went unconscious. In the place where his emotions, his life, his soul had been constantly moving and changing alongside mine, was a fucking black hole. He’d told me that was what it felt like, but nothing could’ve prepared me for the actual feeling.

I tripped over my paws, crashing to the ground and hitting my muzzle on the ground.

He regained consciousness as I made it back to my feet, hearing more drunk, clumsy shifters behind me. Everyone I’d been with had followed me into the forest, and then a few more who were on our side and realized something was wrong when I took off into the trees without a moment’s notice.

“What happened?” I demanded.

“Chloroform, I think.” His voice was groggy. “Some smelly shit on a rag.”

“I’m going to kill them,” I seethed.

“Taking out fifty cats won’t do much in the way of peace, but I’m game if you are.”

I snarled. “Screw peace. They attacked you!”

“And they abducted you.”

Shit. Yeah, I didn’t want to remember that.

I was following his scent, and barreled into some sort of berry bush before reaching him. He was fighting off more shifters than I could count in one sweep of my eyes, and they needed to get the hell away from my mate.

With a battle-howl, I dove into the fight. Blood met my teeth as I tore into the first cat—a small house cat. Throwing him into the trees, still alive though he didn’t deserve it, I moved to the woman behind him. She was a gorgeous lioness, sleek and strong and golden.

My teeth found her shoulder, and she retaliated with force. Her claws swiped at my throat, and I dodged with a backwards-step and a snarl.

A fierce roar echoed through the trees as my grizzly caught the scent of my blood in the air. I felt his mind shift completely, all thoughts vanishing with one sole purpose: to protect me.

…by killing anyone who was a threat.

Though a killing spree wasn’t really Merrick’s style, a shifter would do just about anything to protect his or her mate.

Especially a ruby shifter, and we were the sole survivors on that front.

Merrick’s claws tore through cats without reserve. They fought like hell, though, refusing to give up.

When my entourage caught up, the fight ended quickly.

I could smell a lot of blood but hoped there weren’t any fatalities. Despite how I’d felt when I knew Merrick was in danger, I didn’t want to screw the city up further.

The bloodlust drained from my mate’s mind, his beastly side growing subdued as he realized that I was fine. My injury was surface-level, and the bleeding had even stopped.

Merrick’s hulking grizzly form made its way to me, mewling as he asked me to show him my injury without us touching. I shifted forms, lifting my chin and gesturing to my neck. The cut was far from healed, but it was thin and would heal fast even naturally.

He grunted, looking around at all the unconscious, injured, and hopefully-not-dead shifters.
